Greenland is home to the world’s oldest known deposits of gem-quality corundum — rubies and sapphires formed nearly three billion years ago within one of the oldest geological landscapes on Earth.
Their story is written not only in their extraordinary age but also in their colour. Greenland’s corundum reveals a remarkable natural spectrum from deep blues and soft pinks to violet, purple and ruby-red tones.
We selected these gemstones for jewellery designed around individuality, transformation and the stories we carry with us. Their natural variations in colour and character mean that no two stones are exactly alike.
Rather than seeking absolute uniformity, we embrace the individuality of each stone and the subtle imperfections created by nature.
It is an idea that echoes the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi — finding beauty in imperfection, impermanence and individuality. A gemstone does not need to be identical to another to be beautiful. Its differences are part of what make it its own.

More Than Blue: The Colours of Greenland Gemstones
Sapphire is often associated with blue but the corundum family extends across a remarkable spectrum of colour. Greenland gemstones can reveal shades of blue, pink, violet and purple, alongside the rich red tones classified as ruby.
These colours are created by nature and their variations mean that even stones from the same origin can have distinctly different appearances. Some are intense and saturated; others are softer, muted or contain several tones within a single stone.
For us, this diversity is not something to correct or conceal. It is part of what makes each gemstone individual and part of the beauty of choosing a natural stone.
Ruby and Sapphire: One Gemstone Family
Ruby and sapphire may look very different but they belong to the same mineral family: corundum.
In its pure form, corundum is colourless. Different trace elements within the mineral create the colours we see in gemstones. Red corundum is known as ruby while other colours including blue, pink, purple and violet are generally classified as sapphire.
This shared mineral identity is part of what makes Greenland’s gemstones so fascinating. Within the same geological family can exist an extraordinary variety of colours, tones and individual characteristics.
Why Greenland?
Greenland is a place of extraordinary geological history. Its ancient landscape shaped over billions of years, has created the conditions in which remarkable deposits of ruby and sapphire have formed.
Many of Greenland’s known ruby and sapphire occurrences are found in the southwest of the country where corundum appears in a beautiful range of colours and natural variations.
But our connection to these gemstones goes beyond geology. Greenland and Denmark share a longstanding connection, giving an added sense of meaning to our choice of Greenland gemstones.
We are drawn to stones that carry a sense of place and provenance — gemstones whose natural colours, individual characteristics and imperfections tell us something about where they came from.
For us, their origin is part of their beauty. A Greenland gemstone carries with it not only colour and character but a connection to an ancient landscape and a story that began long before it became part of a piece of jewellery.
